Write to your local MP
The first step to making real improvements to the criminal record system is persuading MPs that change is needed. It’s easier than you think to get in touch with your MP – you can either send them an email or a letter in the post. Click the Find your MP button below to see how to contact your MP.
MPs are most likely to respond to a personal letter, especially one that is written by a passionate constituent who is really motivated to make change. When writing to your MP it’s important to include:
- Your name and address
- A personal explanation of why criminal record reform is important to you
- What you want your MP to do, such as:
- Respond to your letter
- Meet you in person to discuss the real impact of criminal record checks
- Pass your letter on to other MPs or ministers
- Be an advocate for criminal record reform in parliament
- Support FairChecks
It’s best to keep your letter to one A4 page. If you’re not sure how to format your letter, you can download and fill in our template below.
If you send your MP an email, you should receive an automatic response confirming it has been received. If you do not receive a full reply from your MP within three weeks, you may need to follow up by phone or email to confirm your message has been received. When you receive a response from your MP, please let us know by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
