Welcome to FairChecks

FairChecks is a movement calling for urgent reform to the UK’s outdated criminal records system

One in six people in the UK have some form of criminal record. Many have only had minor interactions with the criminal justice system and have long since moved on with their lives. But their criminal record still impacts employment opportunities, volunteering roles, housing rights and even travel.

While criminal record checks are sometimes necessary, in many cases they prevent normal people who made minor mistakes years ago from finding work and moving forward. No one should have to face discrimination for decades when they have already been punished and moved on with their lives.

FairChecks is calling for a full review of the UK’s unfair and outdated criminal records system. We believe that people who have already been punished deserve the chance to move on and work towards a better future. Our three key asks for a fairer system are:

  1. Remove criminal records for cautions
  2. Wipe the slate clean for childhood offences
  3. Stop forcing people to reveal short prison sentences forever

You can learn more about each of these asks and why we think they are urgently needed in our upcoming policy series – stay tuned!

“Everyone deserves a fair chance to move on and contribute to society. In order to move away from crime people need secure employment, somewhere safe to live and support from the community. The stigma of a criminal record prevents people from accessing all of these things. How can we say we believe in rehabilitation when we keep people anchored to their past for decades, even if they’ve never reoffended? We need an urgent overhaul of this outdated and complex system.”
