Harry is still being punished for stealing a bike aged 15

When Harry was 15, he stole a bike in a moment of teenage rebellion. The theft resulted in a short prison sentence, which Harry served before returning to school. He hasn’t committed another crime since.

Now aged 23, Harry’s life has moved on, and he’s recently become a father. But the shadow of his childhood offence continues to impact his life. Harry found work as a mechanic and has been successful. But after his daughter was born, he realised he needed a higher income in order to support his young family.

He saw a chance to earn some extra cash in the evenings as a bouncer, but his old childhood theft appeared on the detailed DBS check required to be a doorman. He has been rejected by multiple venues.

Harry is not alone

1 in 4 working age people in the UK have a criminal record. Most are for minor offences which happened many years ago. These people are just trying to move on with their lives, but their record can keep them trapped in the past, unable to find work or fulfil their potential.

No one should be punished forever

Harry paid his dues as a teenager and has spent years rebuilding his life. But the system keeps him chained to his past, ignoring his present efforts and future potential. His criminal record is now preventing him from giving his daughter the life he wants for her.

Let’s build a better system

People who’ve taken responsibility for their actions need a fair chance to find work and fulfil their potential. But records of old offences, many of which are irrelevant to the job at hand, keep them trapped in the past.

FairChecks is calling for all political parties to support a review of the criminal records system, with the aim of making it fairer and more proportionate. If nothing changes, people who’ve worked hard to turn their lives around will continue to be punished for decades. This isn’t justice.
